Description

Harmonic vibration damper kit, complete with ribbed belt and tensioner. For air-cooled 964 engines.

By combining the alternator and fan, we can use a single belt, eliminating the need for belt monitoring. This is not a problem, as in the very unlikely event of a belt failure, the charge control in the cockpit would indicate the failure.
This kit replaces the V-belt with a 6PK belt and an automatic belt tensioner. The advantages are obvious. The damper reduces the risk of crankshaft breakage and effectively prevents vibrations that lead to gearbox rattling and consequential damage. The ribbed belt, in combination with its ribbed belt tensioner, ensures an optimal connection to the alternator and cooling fan. The automatic tensioner also has the advantage of keeping the belt tension constant. This is a major advantage over the rigid V-belt drive, as the belt tension changes significantly during operation. While the belt tension may be correct when the engine is cold, it increases significantly when the engine is warm. This effectively prevents unnecessary strain on the alternator bearings.

The standard colour of the belt pulleys is black, but we can produce any anodisable colour at an additional cost. In this case, please allow for a delivery time of 4 weeks.

Why does a Porsche need a harmonic damper?
The damper reduces the risk of crankshaft breakage and effectively prevents harmonic vibrations that inevitably lead to gearbox rattling and other consequential damage. However, these vibrations also occur at higher speeds, e.g. on the race track, where harmonic vibrations have already led to breaks in the oil pump with catastrophic consequences.
The engine block of the 911 has basically always remained the same in terms of dimensions.
This also applies to the diameter of the main bearings. What has changed, however, is the engine power. A 3.0 SC with 204 hp did not need a damper, while a 964 with 250 hp already had a damper installed.
Not without reason, as the crankshaft here has rather thin crank webs in favour of wider connecting rod bearing shells and was therefore more prone to breakage.
Later, the crankshafts were more stable again. But: the engine power increased from model to model.
Tuned engines with over 500 hp are not uncommon today, with ever-increasing torsional vibrations on the crankshaft. The bad thing about this is that you don't notice it immediately.
Only when the engine is opened do the consequences become apparent. Discolouration on the back of the main and connecting rod bearings due to vibration corrosion, belt pulleys coming loose, etc.
It is a gradual process. The vibrations are accompanied by material fatigue, and as the mileage increases, so does the risk of component failure, which can result in crankshaft breakage or oil pump gear breakage, leading to catastrophic engine damage.
The energy that is no longer wasted in harmful vibrations with the Multidamper is now available to the drive. We are talking about a power increase of 2-4 hp. This may seem insignificant at first.
But let's assume 3 hp. 3 hp is around 2,2 kW. This means that 2,2 Kilowatts of destructive power have been eliminated. An increase in power is a "nice to have", a pleasant side effect. However, the real added value lies in the knowledge of a stable, long-lasting engine.
Regardless of the destructive engine speeds, the engine runs noticeably smoother between 2500 and 5000 rpm, especially those with long stroke crankshafts.

Our Multidamper is modular by design. This means that it can be dismantled and overhauled. Like all dampers of this type, the Multidamper has rubber damping elements. Rubber ages and changes its properties over the years. We are aware of this and have developed the damper accordingly.
We offer damper overhaul as a service: you send us the damper and we overhaul it for a flat fee of 120 Euro.
The overhaul intervals are 80,000 km in normal operation or 100 hours on the race track.
