Is there a need for another ignition system in addition to those already available?

Yes! Because until now, the only choice was between systems that were either:


Completely independent, fully electronic systems that cannot be easily repaired on the side of the road in the event of a breakdown. While these systems offer advantages such as electronic ignition timing adjustment, etc.—eliminating the need for a distributor or rendering centrifugal ignition timing adjustment obsolete—

Or:

Simple systems such as Piranha, Dyna, or Newtronic, etc., which are based on the distributor and retain centrifugal control. This has the advantage that, if necessary, they can simply be swapped out for the spare breaker plate carried in the vehicle. A major advantage!
But these simple systems also have serious drawbacks:

Workmanship.
Anyone familiar with the Piranha or Newtronic, for example, knows about flimsy plastic connectors, water ingress, etc. Other British systems are better in this regard, but are repeatedly plagued by failures.

Signal processing.
With these systems, just like with a mechanical breaker, the signal from the rotor is passed through 1:1 to the ignition coils. This means: when the ignition is on and the engine is off, the full current always flows through an ignition coil, which after a short time leads to the destruction of the ignition coil and/or the ignition system.

And that’s exactly where we come in.


Although we mount our system (like simple ignition systems) on the distributor—which means it can be quickly replaced with the breaker plate even on the road—it offers the following advantages:

1. Workmanship and compatibility:

Our system is waterprotected. the housing and connector are made of metal.
Measuring 9 x 3.8 x 3.2 cm, the design is very compact and can be installed out of sight, for example, in café racer conversions or open frame triangles.
The wiring is designed so that a switch back to the breaker can be done even on the side of the road within 10 minutes.
The systems are 100% manufactured in-house, and all individual parts are available in the event of a defect.

2. Engine stop Shut-off:

Current only flows to the ignition coils when the engine is running. No more risk to the ignition coils or the system itself while the engine is not running.

3. Ignition dwell control:

This saves a significant amount of power in the Guzzi’s already limited electrical system. A detailed explanation would go beyond the scope of this document, so here is only a brief overview:
An ignition coil requires a certain charging time. In breaker systems, this charging time must always be designed for maximum RPM. This means that at any speed below the maximum, the ignition coil is subjected to an excessively long current flow duration. This leads to unnecessary heating of the ignition coil, which inevitably results in a spark that is up to 35% weaker. And all of this comes with massive power consumption.

Example: 13.5 V electrical system, breaker ignition, standard ignition coil with 3 ohms, speed 3000 rpm. Physically required charging time of the standard coil = 4 ms.
The static coil current = 4.5 A. At a distributor closing angle of 180 degrees = 2.25 A = 30.4 W on average! At an engine speed of 3000 rpm, however, the charging time is 25 ms—more than six times what would be necessary to charge the coil. This is where the dwell control intervenes and stabilizes the time to the required 4 ms. The power required is now 4.2 watts. Without any loss of ignition performance. Plus, cooler ignition coils generate stronger sparks and last considerably longer.  This not a new invention, it has been automotive standard for decades.

4. Ignition adjustment:

This can be done statically while stationary; two LEDs indicate the respective ignition timing. This can also be done on a cylinder-by-cylinder basis for maximum accuracy. Of course, this should be checked with a strobe light. Here, too, nothing needs to be disconnected; no current flows through the ignition coils during the adjustment process.

5. Sequential ignition:

As with the breakers, ignition occurs only during the compression TDC. Many other ignition systems fire “empty” into the overlap TDC. While this works, these systems fire twice as often as necessary. This also results in unnecessary heating, power consumption, and premature aging of the spark plugs and ignition coils.
In extreme cases, this is also a safety concern. Unnecessary ignition during the overlap stroke has already caused fires. A Guzzi Guzzi  owned by one of our customers (LM-2 with funnels) was involved in a low-speed collision with wildlife. It ended up on its side with the engine still running. Gasoline leaked out and it caught fire. Why? Because the intake valve is slightly open during the overlap stroke, and the (unnecessary) spark then ignited the gasoline on the road.
Admittedly, a rare scenario, but that’s exactly how it happened.

What it can’t do, and why that’s still an advantage:

That’s the pre-igintion timing. It’s just like before, achieved mechanically. A disadvantage? No, absolutely not. Because the centrifugal adjuster in the distributor hits its mechanical stop at 4000–5500 rpm. That means that when it really matters, the ignition Timing is absolutely precise for both cylinders. In this regard, the springs in the distributor are decisive—sufficiently accurate and without delays, as is the case with fully electronic systems. These systems often have to calculate the ignition timing first, which always involves a time delay, especially during acceleration.
And yes, a distributor does have some play. But that doesn’t matter, because during acceleration or at a constant speed, the play is virtually zero. The play would only occur during coasting, where it is completely irrelevant.

Conclusion:
